A badminton court in California change how I saw group chats
On a visit to California, I joined a local badminton group. When we arrived at the courts, every player was handed a unique code. To secure your spot, you had to post that code in the WhatsApp group and the admin had to manually scroll through every message and compile it all into a separate list just to know who was playing.
It was a small moment, but it revealed something that happens in every kind of group — sports signups, event RSVPs, trip planning, work rosters. WhatsApp is where the coordination starts, but it was never built to manage it. Replies get buried, admins do repetitive work, and the moment things get complex, people abandon the chat for Notes or Docs, splitting the conversation and losing half the group along the way.
The fix didn't need to be complex. It just needed to live where the conversation already was.
